ICING YOUR FOOT
The Icing on the Foot
Icing the foot can calm aching and ease pain and swelling. If that is your desire, ask your podiatrist how long ice should remain on the aff ected area. If youare using what is handy, such as a bag of frozen vegetables, make sure to wrap it in a towel so that it does not come in direst contact with the skin. Many high-quality foot ice packs are available that are fully adjustable and include ice pockets. Some provide gels that are easily chilled in the freezer and can be ready for reuse in less than an hour. Should you require a means to ice your feet, ask your podiatrist for a recommendation based on your specifi c foot condition.
HINT: Ice packs can stop blood flow to the foot if left on too long.
Do not use ice packs on your feet without the proper instructions from your podiatrist. Feet are vulnerable and prone to complaints, but most problems don’t just disappear on their own. We can treat them eff ectively with medication, surgery, or other, less invasive procedures such as exercise and stretching. Don’t take your feet for granted. Call us at 207-774-0028.
