- Select shoes that match the shape of your foot. If your foot shape matches your shoe shape, you are on the right track to good shoe fit.
- When shoes contact the ground your feet elongate. Allow adequate space (3/4" to 1/2") at the end of the shoe for your longest toe.
- Shop at stores that offer full service, including a good size and width selection and staff trained in proper shoe fitting and measuring.
- Shop for shoes later in the day; feet tend to swell during the day, and it's best to be fitted while they are in that state.
- Always try on both shoes, and walk around the store.
- Always buy for the larger foot; feet are seldom precisely the same size.
- Don't buy shoes that need a "break-in" period; shoes should be comfortable immediately.
- Try on shoes while you're wearing the same type of socks or stockings you expect to wear with the shoes.
- If you wear prescription orthotics -- biomechanical inserts prescribed by a podiatric physician -- you should take them along to shoe fittings.
Diabetic Feet - If you have diabetes, it is especially important to have your feet evaluated at least once a year by a podiatrist. Diabetes can lead to numbness, loss of sensation, poor circulation, infection, ulceration and amputation. I recommended diabetics inspect their feet daily for any changes that may signal a problem. If you notice pain, swelling, or redness, don't think that it will go away on its own, call your podiatrist to schedule an appointment.
